Calypso Cricket
One of South Africa’s largest sports development projects started by Sporting Chance 18 years ago, this annual festival takes place throughout coastal towns during November and December.
More than eight thousand children between the ages of eight and fifteen are involved in the festival, which kicks off in Durban and works its way down the coast via East London, Port Elizabeth, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness, Mossel Bay, Hermanus and The Strand, before finishing off with four festivals in Cape Town. Communities and local sports clubs are an integral part of the programme and although Sporting Chance highlights the fun and educational aspects of the Pick n Pay Calypso Beach Cricket Festival, it has also become a key vehicle to bring together various communities and to identify natural talent. The project is supported by the national Department of Health and various provincial departments, as well as the City of Cape Town, Cricket South Africa and provincial cricket authorities.
After an extremely successful 2007 Calypso tour, Sporting Chance together with title Sponsor Pick n Pay, is once again proud to launch the 2008 PICK N PAY CALYPSO BEACH CRICKET FESTIVAL.
On Monday 24 November 2008 Addington Beach in Durban will host the start of the annual “road show” that includes 9 regions, 14 festivals and 8000 participants.
Each day over 500 participants from the surrounding communities will be transported to the beach to play this specially adapted version of the game along the shoreline of South Africa’s finest beaches.
